You are led to the server initialization wizards when Colasoft nChronos server is installed on your system successfully. Before you go on, you are recommended to read Capture Environment Setup to get some concepts that where you should tap into your network to get the network data you are interested in.

Now you can double-click nChronos server icon on the server system desktop to start your first run, and it opens a web browser showing you the server initialization steps(If you see an error page, please follow the instruction descripted on nChronos FAQs Q1 to fix the problem).

nChronos Server Initialization Step 1

Step 1: create an administrator account. This step is to create a super admin account that you can use to log in the server administration web portal and change settings, such as, change data storage location, change port number, start a capture link, etc.

nChronos server initialization step 1

In case you lose your password or someone else uses the password to make changes to the server, you should make sure that the password is kept in a safe place. If you lost the admin password, you’ll have to reinstall the program.

Then click next button to step 2.

nChronos Server Initialization Step 2

Step 2: set port numbers and data storage locations. First you need set two port numbers, server management port and console communication port.  The server management port enables you to use a web browser to connect to the server administration web portal on this port (port number 80 by default). The console communication port is the server TCP port which listens connection requests from nChronos console, and exchanges data with consoles (by default the port number is 3,000).

nChronos Server Initialization Step 2

If no special requirements, you’d better keep these two port numbers default. Next you need to specify two data storage locations, statistic data location and packet data location. When nChronos starts working to capture and analyze your network traffic, it stores the original packet data and also the analysis statistics to hard disks simultaneously. As you can see the tips on the page, you are recommended to specify the locations on two different physical hard disks, not two disk volumes. And also each requires a minimal free space.

Finish these settings, click next button to next step.

nChronos Server Initialization Step 3

This step is simple which just gives an overview of the settings in the first two steps. Take a look at the settings, and click Done button if all correct. Now the service will automatically restart to apply the settings.

nChronos Server Initialization Step 3

Then you can use the admin account you just created to login the administration portal.
